Air Conditioning

← Back to Air Conditioners

An air conditioner uses refrigerant in contact with air as a heat exchanger to either absorb or reject heat.  In the cooling mode, reverse cycle air conditioners (RCAC) move heat from inside a room to the outdoors. In the heating cycle this process is reversed.

Cooling

A fan draws hot air from the room and passes it over the indoor and outdoor coils which are filled with refrigerant.  The heat is absorbed from the air, cooling it, and then the cooled air is pumped back into the room.

Heating (reverse cycle models)

Using the same principle as above however the temperature of the refrigerant is lower than the temperature of the outside air.  Using the principle that heat flows from a higher temperature to a lower temperature the much colder refrigerant absorbs heat from the outside and this is pumped into the room.
